Shop Jasmine Green Tea | Tea Lovers

Jasmine green tea is one of the most famous and well known scented teas across the world. Most people in Australia first encounter jasmine green tea while dining at a Chinese restaurant, where it is typically served after a meal.

Jasmine green tea is tea that has been infused with the flowers and essence of Jasmine flower blossoms. It offers a refreshing alterative to typical green tea, with a floral and slightly sweet character that is wonderfully aromatic, uplifting and cleansing. Most Jasmine green teas contain not only the scented tea, but also Jasmine flower petals to create a delicate tea presentation. Green tea is typically used as the tea base in jasmine tea; however, white tea and black tea are also used.

Jasmine green tea was first produced in China over 1000 years ago during the South-Song Dynasty, the scenting process was then further developed under the Ming Dynasty, and by the early 20th century the tea blend had become a highly demanded and fast moving trade item across the world.

How is Jasmine green tea produced? The tea leaves used to make jasmine green tea are typically harvested in early spring and are stored until the late summer when jasmine flowers are in bloom. During the late summer the jasmine flowers are picked early in the day (when the petals are tightly closed) and keep cool until night-time. The tea scenting takes place at night when the jasmine flowers open, releasing their essence and fragrance. The tea is scented via either two methods — The tea is blended with the jasmine flowers, or the tea and flowers are layered on top of one another and stored overnight. It takes over four hours for the tea to absorb the fragrance and flavour of the jasmine blossoms — and this scenting process may be repeated as many as six or seven times for producing higher grades of Jasmine green tea such as Yin Hao. At the end of the scenting process the tea is then dried again to remove the moisture absorbed from the jasmine flowers.
