Rooibos Tea: The Herbal Infusion That's Taking Over the World. Rooibos tea is a popular beverage originating from South Africa and is made from the Aspalathus linearis shrub. Unlike traditional tea, which comes from the camellia sinensis plant, rooibos tea is a herbal infusion that is dried and fermented to create a nutritious and flavourful drink. Rooibos tea, which is known for its distinctive red-brown colour, is now enjoyed in over 60 countries worldwide. The origins of rooibos tea can be traced back to the early 1700s when Dutch settlers in Cape Town discovered the drink as an alternative to the expensive black tea from Europe.
