When we think of Japanese green tea we tend to associate it with the following words: ‘Matcha’, ‘Sencha’, ‘Tea Ceremony’, ‘Quality’ and ‘Tradition’. Green tea is undoubtedly the most popular consumed tea in Japan due its health benefits, desired taste and cultural tradition.

Japan is famous for its Japanese green tea due the history of its cultivation as well as the technology and precision of the Japanese manufacturing process. Like all green teas, Japanese green tea is made from the camellia sinensis tea plant, however what makes Japanese green tea different is that it is carefully grown in shaded conditions. This is said to give the tea increased nutritional qualities, such as increased amino acid Theanine, as well as its distinct flavour and slightly sweeter character. This is also what gives Japanese green tea its grassy vibrant colour.

Japanese Green Tea

There are a few different versions as to the origins of Japanese green tea. One consistency is that Japanese green tea was learned and evolved through knowledge and origins from China. In 1191 a Zen Buddhist monk from China, introduced the custom of drinking powdered green tea to Japan. At this time in China the habit of drinking powdered tea was declining and was being replaced by the method of ‘infusing tea leaves’ in water – However in Japan, they continued with the powdered tea custom and developed it perfectly, giving rise to the tea ceremony. Later, in the middle of the 17th century, a Chinese Zen monk introduced tea in the form of ‘infusing tea leaves’ into Japanese society – This was when the variety and diversity of Japanese green tea was born. In the 12th century, a Zen priest named Myouan Eisai, wrote a book called Kissayojoki, in which he talked in detail about tea cultivation, green tea preparation, and how beneficial green tea is for health and long life. The success of his book led to the emergence of a shared tea culture in Japan, where all levels of Japanese society began to drink and adopt tea drinking in their daily lives. Around 1271, after Eisai popularized the idea of tea drinking in Japan, a Buddhist monk ‘Kohken’ planted the first tea trees in Obuku in the Uji region of Japan.

Most renown Japanese green tea includes; Japanese Sencha green leaf tea, Japanese Matcha Powder (powdered sencha green tea), Japanese Gyokuro (premium quality, highly prised shade-grown tea leaves), Japanese Genmaicha (sencha leaf tea blended with toasted rice), Japanese Hojicha (a reddish-brown leaf tea) and Japanese Matcha Genmaicha (genmaicha leaf tea blended with matcha powder).
