The concept of Japanese green tea originated through learnings from China in the Nara period (710-1279). At first it was a drink only enjoyed by the wealthy and upper class. In 1191 a Zen Buddhist monk, introduced the custom of drinking powdered green tea. At this time in China the habit of drinking powdered tea was declining and was being replaced by the method of ‘infusing tea leaves’ in water – However in Japan, they continued with the powdered tea custom and developed and perfected it, giving rise to the tea ceremony, a ritual of Zen Buddhism influence. Later, in the middle of the 17th century, a Chinese Zen monk introduced tea in the form of ‘infusing tea leaves’ into Japanese society – This was when the variety and diversity of Japanese green tea was born.

In the 12th century, a Zen priest named Myouan Eisai, wrote a book called Kissayojoki, in which he talked in detail about tea cultivation, green tea preparation, and how beneficial green tea is for health and long life. The success of his book led to the emergence of a shared tea culture in Japan, where all levels of Japanese society began to drink Japanese green tea and adopt it as part of their daily lives. Japanese green tea is famous all across the world because of its flavour characteristics due to growing region, influence of Japanese taste and level of quality and perfectionism in the manufacture and cultivation process.
